VANCOUVER BREAKERS

The Vancouver Breakers is a hypothetical MLB expansion team. As an avid lover of baseball, having the opportunity to create the look of an entirely new team was too much to pass up. I also value accuracy, so in choosing a city I selected one of the five noted by MLB as sites for possible expansion. Vancouver appealed to me the most, as it is a sprawling and beautiful city. In creating their team, I chose to lean on their love of the waters and use variations on their official city colors.

PROCESS

I started by researching Vancouver itself. No matter what I looked at, everything kept coming back to the water. Feeling that ocean dwellers (Marlins) and explorers (Mariners) were already well represented; however, I chose a name that related to the water itself. This also allowed me to easily make use of the color scheme for the city, that being blue and green. It only seemed natural to me to pair these colors with cream instead of the traditional white.

LOGOS

With this project, I wanted to create as much as I could from scratch. So, I went about designing a partial typeface for use in the logo and on the jerseys. My goal was to create a look and feel that was clearly baseball, but very modern as well. To that end, I knew it would be important to design the logotype in such a way that it would look good in solid white. For the logo that is seen on the hats, I wanted it to reflect the type but stand on its own.

UNIFORMS

I’ve always been attracted to crisp jerseys, so that was my inspiration when it came to designing the Breakers’ uniforms. Rather than the more traditional outlining and strokes seen on most baseball jerseys, I went with one color, solid numbers and letters. I chose blue as the main auxiliary color because it is easier on the eyes. However, the green provides an excellent pop of color when used sparingly. The right sleeves of the jerseys have a special inaugural season patch placed on them.

EXTRAS

I also created a few additional components for the project. Below you’ll see an independant shot of the patch from the jerseys. Rather than a stitched patch, it is a more modern raised plastic patch. I’ve also designed simple and clean tickets for the more expensive seats in the park. Lastly, a special inaugural baseball and player t-shirts are included.
